Yerevan: First Impressions
After breakfast, leave the capital and travel towards the landscapes of Aragatsotn.
Visit Saghmosavank Monastery, dramatically positioned above the Kasagh River gorge.
Continue towards Mount Aragats and Amberd Fortress, a medieval stronghold standing high on the southern slopes of the mountain. Armenia’s official tourism portal places Amberd at around 2,300 metres above sea level, so I would make this part of the program seasonal.
Enjoy lunch featuring regional products before continuing to Gyumri, Armenia’s second-largest city and one of its most distinctive cultural centres.
Arrival and hotel check-in.
Overnight in Gyumri
For the colder season, Amberd can be replaced by another cultural stop such as Talin or Harichavank, keeping the itinerary operational year-round.
Yerevan – Saghmosavank – Amberd – Gyumri
Spend the day discovering a completely different urban face of Armenia.
Walk through the historic Kumayri district, with its characteristic black and warm-coloured volcanic stone architecture, old merchant houses and cobbled streets.
Visit one of Gyumri’s historic house museums to learn about the lifestyle of the city’s families during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The experiential part of the day should be important here: I would include a local craft workshop — pottery, blacksmithing or another traditional Gyumri craft — followed by lunch featuring Shirak regional cuisine.
Continue through the local market and smaller neighbourhood streets rather than making this only a conventional sightseeing tour.
Free evening to enjoy Gyumri’s cafés and artistic atmosphere.

Architecture, Crafts & Local Character
Breakfast and check-out.
Leave Gyumri and continue towards Lori, with the day focused on rural Armenia and local encounters.
Stop in a village for a hosted experience with a local family. Depending on the final supplier, this could include homemade bread, cheese, seasonal preserves, herbal tea or participation in a simple traditional cooking activity.
Continue to Dsegh, the birthplace of Armenian poet Hovhannes Tumanyan.
Visit the Tumanyan House Museum and walk through the village and surrounding landscapes.
Continue into the spectacular Debed Canyon.
Dinner featuring Lori regional cuisine.

Gyumri – Village Armenia – Dsegh – Debed Canyon
Today is dedicated to northern Armenia’s medieval heritage.
Visit Haghpat Monastery and Sanahin Monastery, which together form a UNESCO World Heritage property. The complexes developed between the 10th and 13th centuries and were important centres of learning and religious culture.
Rather than adding too many churches, I would slow this day down and combine the heritage with the landscape and local life of the canyon.
Visit the historic Sanahin Bridge, enjoy viewpoints over the Debed Valley and stop for lunch at a local guesthouse or family-run restaurant.
In the afternoon, include a local experience such as honey tasting, herbs, cheese or a small farm visit.

Haghpat – Sanahin – Debed Canyon
Breakfast and check-out.
Visit Odzun, known for its early medieval basilica and beautiful setting above the Debed Canyon.
Continue through the landscapes of Lori towards the Stepanavan region.
Depending on season, visit the Stepanavan Dendropark for a relaxed walk among its extensive collection of trees and mountain vegetation.
I would add one final countryside lunch here rather than another monastery.
Continue to Yerevan.
In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner in the capital.
